Follonica - Hotels and Apartments

In the province of Grosseto lies the city of Follonica; the town of just over 21000 inhabitants overlooks the center of the Gulf of Grosseto on the Tyrrhenian Sea. In the hinterland there are the Metalliferous Hills of Grosseto.

Historically ancient evidences of the city date back to the year 884 AD and are represented by the ruins of the Valli Castle , visible on a hilly in the north area of the city.

The actual urbanization took place about 10 centuries later, when, in 1834, the Royal and Imperial Foundries were built by the will of Leopoldo II of Tuscany.

A monument of historical and artistic interest is, for example, the Church of San Leopoldo, of considerable historical and architectural value, built starting from 1836. The peculiarity of this building is the use of cast iron. Remaining in the context of religious buildings, it is also important to mention the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, a parish church built in 1966 and which represents an appreciable example of contemporary architecture.

The area known as "ex Ilva" rmbraces the various abandoned Ilva factories , where the minerals from the island of Elba were treated. The buildings, left empty starting from 1960, still represent an interesting example of industrial archeology of one of the most important steel sites in the past at a national level.

Follonica There are also some protected natural areas, such as, for example, the Tomboli di Follonica nature reserve, which includes two pine forests (one in the west and another in the east) and has been active since 1977.

Follonica has become an important seaside tourist destination since the 60s, when hotels and campsites began to develop. The quiet of the place given both by the sea and by the pine forests makes Follonica a place suitable for families with children, even during summer.
